What is cycle and soak ?
Cycle and soak is the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s recommended method of landscape irrigation. It involves running your sprinklers for shorter intervals several times a day. This method conserves water and prevents run off by providing soil ample time to soak up water between cycles.
Why doesn’t cycle and soak work?
Cycle and soak irrigation is a short term fix for a long term problem. It doesn’t really address the issue of growing droughts and increasing water restrictions. It simply passes the buck further down the line.
The future outlook for natural grass lawns is bleak at best. Ambitious new regulations aim to curb water use by limiting applications for natural grass. Last year local authorities passed legislation making traditional lawns outright illegal for nonfunctional use by 2027. This new law makes it so that sooner or later, you’ll have to rip up your old grass anyway. So you might as well do it now to make use of the SNWA’s Water Smart Landscapes program while you still can! This program will pay you up to $3 per square foot of grass to replace your existing lawn with drought-friendly landscaping. This rebate is available to residential properties, businesses, and HOAs.
Single family homes, golf courses, and parks have been spared from removal for the time being, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to survive the desert heat much longer. If you think cycle and soak will save you from reseeding in the years to come, you may be sorely mistaken.

Droughts are only getting worse. And in the Vegas Valley there isn’t much water to spare! Lake Mead, which supplies Las Vegas’s 2.5 million citizens 90% of their water dropped to its lowest point in 2021. This has led to new water restrictions which severely limit how often Vegas residents can water their lawns and how much water they can use. Noncompliance will be met with steep fines ranging from from $80 for the first violation to $5,120 for the fifth violation!
