With the Super Bowl just around the corner, and the ongoing issues of Levi’s Stadium grass, we wanted to remind field managers how important proper field maintenance is to your athletes. Whether your field is natural grass or synthetic turf, it’s critical you test the field to make sure it’s soft enough for play.
Neglecting this could result in dangerous injury for athletes, as concussions often occur when players impact the surface of the field.
While far more concussions still occur from helmet-to-helmet hits and other collisions, the authors note that keeping fields from becoming too hard can prevent head injuries.
The importance of testing your field’s hardness can not be overstated – doing so will inform you whether or not the hardness of your field ie below the NFL’s limit, which in turn could help prevent dangerous injury.
A vast majority of playing fields nationwide are still natural grass, and they too can become dangerously hard, particularly in cold weather. Harder fields absorb less of a player’s energy when he or she falls, increasing the risk of injury.
One of the nice things about synthetic turf in this regard is you can use a top dress to add more rubber and in turn soften the field to an acceptable condition.
