Do you know how much it actually costs to water your lawn?
The cost of water is increasing, so now might be a good time to reevaluate how much you’re paying for utilities.
Below we break down exactly how to figure out the amount of money you spend watering your lawn each month!
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Find how much water it takes to water your lawn
Multiply your lawn’s square footage by 0.62 gallons, the equivalent of an inch of water per square foot. This will determine the total number of gallons you need to water your entire lawn.
Square Footage X 0.62 Gallons = Amount of Water it Takes to Water Your Lawn
Next, multiply the amount of water it takes to water your lawn by how many days a week you water.
Currently, you’re only supposed to water once per week in the winter. This number goes up to three days a week in the fall and spring, and six in the summer.
Amount of Water X Number of Days You Water Per Week = Water You Use Per Week
Lastly multiply the number of weeks in your billing cycle with how much water you use per week.
Water You Use Per Week X Number of Weeks in Billing Cycle = Monthly Water Use
2. Use the estimator to calculate how much that will cost
Using this link, you can determine how much it costs to water your lawn each month!
Enter the amount of water that you use on your lawn per month which we calculated above under “Water usage.” Then enter the billing period and meter size and hit “Estimate.”
To see how much it costs to water your lawn in the summer when you’re allowed to use your sprinklers more days a week and the need for water is greater, just change the dates under “Billing period.”
Note: This estimator also includes an excessive use charge for high water users. This charge changes from season to season, but the estimator takes this into consideration using the billing period that you enter.
3. Figure out how much of your total water bill is spent on your lawn
Lastly, take your last water bill and divide that by how much it costs to water your lawn each month. This will tell you about what percentage of your monthly water bill goes toward your lawn. The number might surprise you!
Previous Water Bill / Cost to Water Your Lawn = Percent of Water Bill Spent on Lawn
