The Southwest’s growing megadrought has reduced the flow of water into the Colorado River, forcing Nevada communities to cut back dramatically on landscape irrigation.
According to Reuters, living grass requires 73 gallons of water per year, per square foot. That’s enough water to cover the entirety of Vegas in water ten feet deep.
60% of Las Vegas’s water is used outdoors where the harsh desert sun quickly evaporates it, preventing it from being recaptured. This has led water levels in the Colorado River and Lake Mead to drop to near-record-lows. In response, the Southern Nevada Water Authority is clamping down on water waste. The SWNA’s seasonal watering schedule outlines how often residents can water their lawns.
New water restrictions have made it so that Vegas residents can only water their lawn ONE day a week during winter of 2022-23. You can find your watering day and group using this link.
Watering restrictions also apply to drip irrigation, and running your sprinklers on Sunday is prohibited.
Can Las Vegas fine me for water waste?
Yes! Water waste fines can range from $80 for the first violation to $5,120 for the fifth violation.
If water waste is reported, your local water district will investigate the claim and issue a notice. If you fail to fix the problem, the district will add fees to your water bill. A rebate for first-time fees is available to citizens who attend a water conservation class or complete a Curbing Water Waste test.
How can I reduce my water use?
New water restrictions that may affect the landscaping on your property! A new Las Vegas law may require the removal of non-functional grass by 2027. Property owners can use existing rebates to cheaply replace their landscaping now, and not risk having to shell out a ton of money for it in the future.
You can cut your water bill and avoid water waste fines by switching to drought-friendly landscaping! Southern Nevada Water Authority is offering up to $3 per square foot of yard space to replace natural grass with desert-friendly landscaping. The SNWA will accept artificial grass as a substitute for mulch, instead of rock or bark.
To qualify, the turf you install will need to be permeable, allowing air and water to pass freely. Your project will also need to meet several other program conditions, including 50% plant coverage and low-flow irrigation.
