Where Can Artificial Grass Be Installed?

Natural rock can serve as edging to the artificial grass. Grasses are tucked and secured under the rock surfaces. Insist on use of sturdy artificial turfand durable fabrics over native soils to separate the base layers and to keep weeds out and the base in place.

Blocks and pavers are also attractive and functional as trim for artificial grass. Trimming with hard elements, such as bricks and pavers, in areas where natural lawn, weeds or other organic materials will butt up against the turf is a great way to provide a solid edge.

Using existing flagstones may require you to set the stone and then cut and fit the turf products round them. An easier solution would be to set 1to 1.5 inch flagstones on top of the turf and work the blades of the artificial grass out from underneath.

Drainage is the most important aspect when dealing with placing artificial grass in between concrete slabs and pads. Several inches of drain rock at the base layer, prior to the installation of compacted materials can improve drainage.

Artificial grass can even be installed against an uneven edge, such as asphalt. The turf can be trimmed to fit which adds to the natural look.

Idea and Site Artificial Grass Worksheet

  • We are now going to go through an Idea and Site Worksheet that can be helpful in planning for an estimate and installation.
  • This is a checklist and some idea starters that you can use to pre-plan for your consultation with your clients. Not only will it help in the design process but it will also give your client some idea of all that is included in the design process.
  • You will want to leave a copy with the client so that they can take care of any pre- existing conditions that will need to be fixed before installation can begin.
  • Check the appropriate boxes at the top.
  • Goals for the area – talk to the client about what their goals are for the area. What do they want it to function as? How much foot traffic?  What kind of “look” are they trying to achieve? Listen to what they have to say.

Artificial Grass Existing Conditions

  • Percolation – What is percolation? The ability of a surface to allow the flow of fluids through it – percolation is generally measured in inches per hour, ounces per second over the amount of surface area, defined. (ie: engineered to optimize drainage Artificial turfby gravity, 30 inches of water can percolate through synthetic grass surfaces per hour).
  • Talk to the client about any problems they may have about water drainage, rain run-off, puddling, flooding, etc. Artificial grass can actually be helpful in some of these troubled areas.
  • Elevation – Does the client want to keep the current grass elevation or level it out? Removal of large amounts of dirt takes time and don’t forget about dumping fees!
  • Existing Materials – If concrete, does the client want the turf installed on top of it, or do they want it torn out? If grass, talk to client about the installation process and how soil will need to be removed.
  • Access – Can workers and the necessary equipment be brought into the area for the installation? If required, can a bobcat fit into the area?

 

Changes and Additions

For these questions, you need to draw out a detailed sketch of the electrical, gas, irrigation, water and drainage lines lay in the area of installation.

  • Are there any plans for a pool or water feature?
  • Patio or walkways?
  • Are new walls going up or existing walls coming down?

You want to learn as much as possible before the installation because serious delays come from broken water pipes and cut electrical lines that you didn’t know were installed improperly. Also check with the local municipalities.

Job Site Survey

Here are some key points to consider when consulting with a client:

  • What artificial grass style will compliment the natural lawns in the area? You want the installation to fit in with the neighborhood. The grass color may be a factor to consider here.
  • What will the area be used for and how often? Is this going under a playground or in a dog-run? What is the foot traffic like in the installation area? If this is a high traffic area, you will want to recommend an artificial grass that can withstand it. A less expensive grass can be used in a low-traffic area.
  • What will the site require in preparation and engineering to achieve the desired final results? If it’s a large area, will a bobcat be necessary? If the elevation of the area varies, would it be beneficial to flatten the grade?
  • Access to the area for labor, equipment and materials? Is the side walkway of the house big enough for a bobcat to fit through? Is there a safe place to store materials overnight?
  • What are the requirements of heavy equipment, permits, etc?
  • Local CC&R and Design Regulations – What does the Home Owner’s Association require and allow?
  • Local weather, native soil conditions, local watershed and 10 year drainage plan
  • What exists now – irrigation, drainage, problems?    Does the client want to completely turn off the sprinklers or redirect them to surrounding shrubbery? Is there pipe that has been laid that is not up to code? Are there drainage problems? All of these need to be addressed and repaired before installation can begin.
  • What needs to be changed, added and modified?
  • And here is the $10,000,000 questions – What is the client’s budget?

 

Estimating Artificial Grass Lawn Projects

If you have estimated a natural grass or landscaping project, then you will find that artificial grass estimations are quite similar. It is actually a combination of a sod installation and indoor carpet installation. Each type of installation material needs the very best solution and guidelines to succeed. Preparation of the site, irrigation, drainage and lighting considerations can vary between these two different systems and as do many of the job materials required.

The components of the installation include the artificial grass itself, infill materials, seaming materials and supplies. Drop spreaders and power brushes are some of the specialized tools and equipment that facilitate the installation process. Most residential and commercial artificial grass installations should be estimated using small construction hand-tools, small power equipment and manual labor, but occasionally larger equipment will be required.

Every job is a unique experience. No two jobs are ever exactly alike. The installer must be flexible, and successful estimation comes with experience.

 

Create a Pattern

Artaficial turfIt is recommended that you use a clear pattern, using numbers or letters to indicate the pieces of the pattern, including where seams are and which direction the grain should go.

When constructing your pattern, keep the roll widths in mind. Most rolls come in 15” widths, but there is some variance from grass to grass. Large pieces can be trimmed, and this trim can be used in another part of the design as long as the surface grain remains in the same direction. Laying out the large pieces goes quickly, while fitting and seaming time is more time consuming. Be sure to budget labor and materials for these different rates of work.

  • Create your designs from a “birds- eye” view. Your goal is to create a pattern to the job’s specifications from this vantage point. Use a flexible tape to take measurements and remember to allow for the rise and fall of the final grad by draping the tapes over the ground. Be sure to round up to the next linear foot when estimating for your materials.
  • Use another sheet of paper to create a bulleted list of job details. Your notes need to be clear and legible so that other team members can read and understand them, and your client will clearly understand what is going on.

Grooming and care needs for your dog or other animal artificial turf areas.

 

Artificial turf is great for pet owners and for pets, all pet owners know what goes in the front must come out the back.

Defecation materials, spit and other biological stuff can be deposited by pets on artificial turf. Synthetic grass and artificial turf needs some regular maintenance and cleaning. This regular maintenance will keep your artificial grass clean, safe and fresh for you, your family and friends.

Any solid materials or waste needs to be removed regularly. Leaving any solid waste materials on the synthetic grass will contaminate and decay the area over time. It is highly suggested to remove the solid waste at least once a day.

Treat any loose material with care, removing with gloves and spot treating with cleaners. Irrigate and rinse off the area locally. Do Not hose solids away this just spreads the waste across a larger area.

If it is a dry day it is ok to leave the solid materials to dry and harden. During wet weather remove all waste as soon as you notice it. This will prevent them from breaking down in wet weather.

Animals urinate, this cannot be helped. Urine can be difficult to see. The best practice is to treat the whole area. It is ok to sanitize and deodorize artificial grass. Most products require one gallon of water per 500 square feet. This allows for optimum coverage. This should do the job of sanitizing your pet’s artificial grass area. It is good to use a hose to drizzle water on the area after treating; this helps to push the sanitizing liquids further into the artificial grass.

How much waste determines how often you should sanitize and groom the area. If you are a single dog family with a medium to large family dog, you will have to sanitize and groom the area at least once a week. A clinic or kennel may have to do this daily. Deodorizing and sanitizing is critical to your long term enjoyment and use of the synthetic grasses and artificial turf.

For Best Results from Artificial Turf:

  • Keep site free of organic debris, leaves, sticks and such, solid waste will be easier to clean up and see.
  • If your pets are sick at any time you want to make sure to sanitize and disinfect their area.
  • During winter rains, irrigating the area is not needed, summer sun and dryness it is needed. During summer time treat your artificial grass with full strength cleaners and irrigate the area weekly to wash treatments deep into your artificial grass.

Artificial Grass Terminology

Each industry has its own terminology. Here are some key terms to become familiar with when dealing with artificial grass.

  • Pattern: Defines the installation area and then helps the installer determine the turf needs by creating a pattern or map of what pieces, and at which size are appropriate to complete the job with the least amount of waste possible. The installer should be able to re-create the pattern on the ground with their tape measures. The pattern also indicates the seams, water, electricity, and other utilities.
  • Turf Grain – The lean of the grass blades on a roll of artificial grass. In order for seams to be invisible, the blades of grass need to go in the same direction.
  • Hard Edge – Hard edges are perimeter edges of a synthetic grass installation project that touch elements that will not or cannot move; walkways, driveways, walls, patios, fences, buildings, foundations, etc. Synthetic grass materials must be hand-trimmed to these edges.
  • Soft Edges – Any landscape or lawn edge that does NOT connect or touch upon a hard, unmoving surface material such as a walkway, path, driveway, wall, fence line, or other surfaces such as field rocks. Soft edges are flexible in their finishing and do not require a precise cut. This would include tucking the turf under rocks or other materials.
  • Tucked Edges – grass is hidden under some type of rock, small boulder, block or even poured concrete.
  • Rolled Edges – Rolled edges are created using a specific building technique that allows you to form a closed edge that is appropriate to backfill with materials such as bark, gravel or other decorative landscape material. A rolled edge can be used instead of using a board or curbed edge.

Design and Engineering Considerations When Installing Artificial Grass

The goal of every installation is to achieve a long-lasting, functional, and natural looking landscape.  Always consider what will be necessary to prepare the area before an installation can begin.

Excavation can include removing sod, soil, problem concrete, asphalt and other existing materials that could impede a proper installation.  Also take into consideration the final grade (angle) of the project, use and accessibility to the site prior to starting the job.

There are four basic installation techniques that we will discuss are:

Properly draining concrete, or asphalt – the artificial grass can be placed on top, but be advised that a turf padding can help to create a more natural feel and cushion.

Natural sod or soil – it is recommended to excavate down to 3 inches below grade. Next add a durable and porous synthetic fabric for artificial turfweed prevention.  Then add your base layers (we will go into more option details later), as required by your design. Compact base down to approximately 1 inch below final grade. Finally, add the artificial grass on top.

If your final grade needs to be level with existing elements such as walkways, driveways or patios, allow adequate excavation and estimation of base materials to raise the base to 1 inch below the final grade of the hardscape element.

Crowned Lawns – bring in additional materials and shape the base, during compaction, appropriately. The hard-edge should still be set, after compaction to 1 inch below the grade of the hard-edge.

To provide for additional water run-off, insert a small channel of drainage rock (a French drain) prior to the addition of base material. When combined with the proper soil stabilizing fabrics, the French drain will allow run-off to fall below the surface and channel out without the risk of erosion.

Artificial Grass Between Concrete – when installing artificial grass in-between large flagstones and concrete slabs, allow for additional excavation due to water run-off. Several layers of mixed base material may be needed and consider the possibility for additional drain pipes, catch basins, connectors and drain rock.

 

Side Yard Construction: Drainage for Artificial Turf

During residential construction, homes are developed to have roof-line and ground water run-off to a daylight rain head where artificial turfwatershed will join with other run-off volume. Most artificial grass backings contain drain holes to allow water to percolate vertically through in to the ground. Gravity helps with drainage, and eliminates the need for unsightly drain heads on the surface of the turf.

Some artificial grass does not included drain holes, and thus, percolates horizontally. (Drawings) If using this type of turf, the installation must allow for watershed above the artificial grass materials. Also, the base material needs to slope appropriately and contour toward the drain heads.  Be sure to check with the local cities for codes and restrictions.

Excavation of a side yard is the same as any natural grass installation: excavate and grade native soils and lay down a 4-6 oz of fabric. When installing artificial grass in a side yard you will need to take the following into consideration.

Bring in round drain rock or larger pea gravel and add it to the swale until it fills to a level height with outer edges. Compress this material. Add a second layer of fabric over the drain rock, extending the edges past the perimeter that will be used to fold back onto the compacted base. rials later.

When adding stepping stones, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s suggestions as to the appropriate base used under the rocks for the proper amount of stability. Another option is to use a compactable crushed rock under the stepping stone which will allow water to percolate and the stones to remain stable over time.

The use of crushed or rounded rock layers helps to deter underground pests, including worms, ants, burrowing insects rodents and evasive root systems from propagating and creating sub-surface structure concerns in the future.

Warning – Many “residential” or “retail” weed barrier fabrics do not have the vertical and/or horizontal strength to stand up to the demands of permanent construction projects, UV, high traffic and extreme weather conditions. Be sure to use a high quality fabric in your installations. 4-6 oz is a minimum recommendation.

Every job is a unique experience. No two jobs are ever exactly alike. The installer must be flexible, and successful estimation comes with experience.

 

Create a Pattern for Artificial Turf

It is recommended that you use a clear pattern, using numbers or letters to indicate the pieces of the pattern, including where seams artificial grassare and which direction the grain should go.

When constructing your pattern, keep the roll widths in mind.  Most rolls come in 15” widths, but there is some variance from grass to grass. Large pieces can be trimmed, and this trim can be used in another part of the design as long as the surface grain remains in the same direction. Laying out the large pieces goes quickly, while fitting and seaming time is more time consuming. Be sure to budget labor and materials for these different rates of work.

  • Create your designs from a “birds- eye” view. Your goal is to create a pattern to the job’s specifications from this vantage point.  Use a flexible tape to take measurements and remember to allow for the rise and fall of the final grad by draping the tapes over the ground.  Be sure to round up to the next linear foot when estimating for your artificial grass.
  • Use another sheet of paper to create a bullet list of job details. Your notes need to be clear and legible so that other team members can read and understand them and your client will clearly u0nderstand what is going on.

  • •There are very few limits as to where artificial grass can be installed.
  • •It can be installed against concrete walkways and driveways. The artificial grass is cut to the exact shape of the hard edge so that you get a perfect fit. Grasses can be set below, at or above the grade of the concrete depending on the final look and feel you wish to achieve.
  • •Artificial grass can be installed on top of concrete. Artificial grass makes any concrete area soft and natural looking. It will also help to reduce glare from light colored driveways and patios. The edges can be cut into any shape.

    • Blocks and pavers are also attractive and functional as trim for artificial grass. Trimming with hard elements, such as bricks and pavers, in areas where natural lawn, weeds or other organic materials will butt up against the turf is a great way to provide a solid edge.
    • Using existing flagstones may require you to set the stone and then cut and fit the turf products around them.   An easier solution would be to set 1 to 1.5 inch flagstones on top of the turf and work the blades of the artificial
    • grass out from underneath.
      • Drainage is the most important aspect when dealing with placing artificial grass in between concrete
      • slabs and pads. Several inches of drain rock at the base layer, prior to the installation of compacted materials can improve drainage.
        • Artificial grass can even be installed against an uneven edge, such as asphalt. The turf can be trimmed to fit which adds to the natural look.

Uses for Artificial Grass/Artificial Lawn

Sports field projects drive the development of most turf products and the benefits trickle down to the residential and commercial landscape user. Today’s synthetic grass and artificial turf yarns deliver outstanding durability, safety, resiliency and value. Consider what a typical field surface might be subjected to during its lifetime.

artificial turfIn contrast to your residential or commercial lawn and landscape project, play field surfaces have been built to survive the rigors of high traffic, aggressive sports play and many endure annual festivals and events that outdo any party or gathering you could subject your project site to on a regular basis. Field maintenance and grooming is scheduled to keep the area fresh and safe.

Low maintenance will include removal of all organic debris, sanitizing agents applied to surfaces, fibers brushed and groomed, UV products may be applied and infills may be refreshed. Of course, due to the 10s of thousands of square feet they have to maintain, field crews have power equipment that can help them do these tasks efficiently and effectively. Consumers have scaled-down choices.

Most manufacturers agree that a well-used community or high school field may last up to 8 to 10 years. With limited amount of wear and tear – your landscape area could last a lot longer.

Many dynamics to the installation and its use come into play to estimate the life of a field. Weather and UV conditions, other landscape elements (grasses, trees, wild-lands), days used, contamination elements (food, beverages, biological contaminants) and how often the field is groomed all take their toll on a field. Most field owners limit access to fields and food and beverages are generally not allowed (water accepted). This eliminates only a portion of the possible contaminants as player’s body fluids may create their own set of problems, over time; hence the need for sanitation.

Your new lawn area is, after all, a part of the grand landscaping scheme you have designed, outdoors! Mother Nature alone will subject the area to everything other landscape elements in your world have to face.

To keep ahead of the game, include a bi-monthly cleanup of your area to remove debris and organic materials. Rotting materials will create habitat for insects and other pests and seeds can germinate in the piles. Other than your own needs to sanitize due to pet defecation or food and beverage spills—mostly, what your job should be is sitting and watching your grass grow!

Let’s review some common misconceptions about synthetic grass and artificial turf ….

Weeds

Weeds, grasses and other seeds can and do germinate upon synthetic grass surfaces just as they will on concrete, asphalt and paved surfaces.

You should incorporate a regular weed & seed pre & post emergent schedule. Rural installations, sites built next to lawn or grass areas and those in high-construction zones will typically see more seed germination than areas installed in mature landscaping.

Seeds are small and fall in between yarn fibers where they get trapped. A few drops of rain and Mother Nature kicks in and you have germination. A little hands on maintenance and regular treatments are the trick.

Heat

Synthetic grass and artificial turf can get hot in full sun, especially in dry climates. Installed on asphalt, concrete and other hard surfaces, the artificial turf will remain just as hot as the original would be under local conditions.

Smaller areas can be cooled down using water or shade. Darker and thicker yarn fibers prove to be warmer than lightly colored thin blades.

Infill materials do affect the overall temperature of the surfaces. Select your infill with temperature in mind – black crumbed rubber will always be at the high end of the heat spectrum and lightly colored, granules being at the low end of the heat spectrum.

Toxicity

Hundreds of peer reviewed, in depth tests have been completed on the artificial turf surface materials, backing, yarns and infill materials used for most professionally installed artificial grass solutions.

Results, to date, do not conclusively prove that synthetic grass and any of the selection of infill materials (including crumbed recycled tire rubbers – SBR or ambient crumb rubber) adversely affect the players on sport field surfaces; professional or school fields.

Again, the professional use of these surfaces for sports uses drives the investment in extensive testing and results show that neither turf nor infill pose any health challenges to the environment or those in contact.

What can pose challenges for humans using artificial turf surfaces would be the lack of

  1. proper and regular grooming
  2. improper personal hygiene
  3. improper sanitation of surfaces
    after play or contamination

Any surface can become a hazard when exposed to outdoor elements and human or animal waste.

Treatments for sanitation and cleaning are easily and effectively applied by the home owner or professionals.

Used wisely, with appropriate grooming, maintenance and attention to personal hygiene – artificial grass surfaces and infill materials are no more hazardous than any other landscape or building materials.

Lifetime

The expected lifetime of a artificial lawn, artificial turf or landscape area is hard to define. Most turf is warranted not to fade, stain or fall apart for 6 or more years; some until 8 or more years — a few turf manufacturers are offering extended wear warranties of longer terms for landscape uses.

Factors such as use, installation, type of turf, UV factors, should be considered. In a low traffic landscape application, most turf will last well in excess of any community accessible football field, under typical conditions. Typically, a field used at a high school should last in excess of 10 or more years. Considering natural grass can die overnight, due to a wide variety of uncontrollable issues and elements, and is generally not covered under a warranty, a synthetic grass lawn, already has several factors in its favor!

What can damage a synthetic turf area is neglect. Keeping it free from debris, sanitized and groomed will be the key to your long-term enjoyment. How often depends upon your personal circumstances.
